Our top priority in 2020 is to improve the recruitment and retention of workers in the heavy construction industry. We recognize that the shortage of workers in our industry is expected to worsen as it is predicted that 1 in 5 workers will retire in the next 10 years. We must improve public perception of our industry and address barriers such as restricted hours of work that impact on our ability to recruit and retain a sustainable workforce.

In 2020, we are undertaking a multi-year recruitment project  to address industry labour shortages in the Ottawa area. We will be calling on you, our members, to provide input and feedback as we develop recruitment strategies to help us all going forward.

Each month, NCHCA presents a safety award to an individual who demonstrates awareness of safety issues and acts proactively to prevent injury or damage to property.

The September Safety Award recognizes Justin Montgomery, Foreman, Aecon Construction Ontario East Ltd., for recognizing a serious safety issue and taking action to ensure the safety of workers.

An Aecon crew was working in a basement parking garage with a ventilation system in place. A third-party concrete crew working in the garage isolated its work area with tarps, which blocked the main outlet of Aecon’s ventilation system. Justin recognized the danger and warned the third-party crew that they were working in a toxic atmosphere with levels of CO up to 200ppm. Both crews exited the area to wait for CO levels to stabilize. The tarp was taken down, safety talks were given to inform workers of the hazards of a dangerous atmosphere, and the ventilation system was modified to offset the additional workers and equipment.

Justin’s proactive approach ensured a safer jobsite and prevented potential injury. Congratulations Justin!

The August Safety Award recognizes a Louis Bray Construction Limited worker for his actions in recognizing a safety issue. The Louis Bray worker came upon a subcontractor worker that was using marijuana, then an illegal substance, in a safety sensitive environment.

He recognized this as a safety concern and creating a dangerous and potentially life-threatening situation. The Louis Bray worker reported the incident to his supervisor and the subcontractor worker was subsequently removed from the site.  The worker’s proactive approach ensured a safer jobsite and prevented potential injury or damage to property. Congratulations!
